forward

September 15, 2010

“I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving.” ~Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

Forward. That is what I told one of my students the other day.

As long as you’re moving forward, that’s what matters.

And I believe that’s true. Sometimes the pace is slow and halting. Sometimes it’s break-neck speed. Sometimes it’s just steady and sure.

As long as you’re moving forward, that’s what matters.

Of course, how we get to where we’re going matters, too, but if  we’re too worried about “how” we may never move at all. Sometimes moving forward means taking a few steps backwards, too. And that’s okay. Moving forward looks different for different people, but the end result is the same. When all is said and done…

As long as you’re moving forward, that’s what matters.

This is the truth that I embrace when each step takes determined effort. It is just as true when I feel like I’m walking on the clouds. Either way the direction is forward. It must always be forward.

Jesus said to put my hand to the plow and not look back (Luke 9:62). Always forward.

As long as you’re moving forward, that’s what matters.

The days are getting shorter now and the mornings & evenings a little cooler. I have not felt the true crispness that accompanies fall, but it will come soon. Next week fall begins!

We’re moving forward!
